Aair Transport Command
I knew Bill from flying with him to Africa in 1996. Aviation
was his Yale College and his Harvard, to paraphrase Melville. There are
pilots with many more hours than Bill had, but I've never known another
pilot with Bill's breadth of experience.
This is the
preliminary NTSB report.
If you are in a position to contribute to his surviving family,
please do so. Ferry piloting comes with little life insurance.
Read this story Bill was working on publishing before his demise, on
flying a Cessna 337 from Honolulu to San Francisco.

William DuFour, head of this company,
died while ferrying a cropduster to Panama on May 9, 1997, 25 miles
north of David, Panama.
This is just inside the northern border of Panama.
There are conflicting interpretations of what two witnesses said; either
the plane caught on fire and then went straight down, or it crashed and
then became a fireball.

Approximate location of David, Panama.
Crash site is 25 nm north near a river.
